Say, tell, speak, talk

Он буквально значит «use your voice to express something in words» (использовать голос, чтобы передать что-либо словами).

He said that he wouldn’t be able to come to the party, since he has lots of work to do.

«Good morning», Anna said. «How can I help you?»

I wouldn’t say that he’s a great guitarist.

Does the article say how the fire happened?
The letter says that I’ve been accepted to the college.
The clock says five minutes after ten.
The calendar says that Christmas falls on a Monday.

То есть сказать «‘Stop it!’, he told» не получится. Например, he told ME, she tells US, they told HER.

Глагол «say» не требует косвенного дополнения, то есть нам не обойтись без предлога «to»: he said TO ME, she said TO US, they said TO HER.

«Stop it!», Anna said. -> Anna told him to stop.
«Come next week, he’ll be there for sure», Victor said. -> Victor told me to come next week.

Так что не пугайтесь, если вдруг увидите предложение вида «I asked him if he wanted it today but he said to leave it till tomorrow».

В то же время фразу «I need to talk to you» скажет скорее друг или очень хороший знакомый.

Dr. Foster will speak about the differences in world perception by men and women.
Next week she will speak about the history of the art.

Вы можете «talk to your friends» или «talk to your partner», однако использовать «talk» при контакте с целой аудиторией студентов или слушателей уже не получится.

Например:

They talked and talked for hours trying to catch up for all these years.
Linda will talk about her business plan.
We want to talk through the options.

А вот если нам надо подчеркнуть особенность речи, то можно употребить предлог «in»: «He spoke in a high trembling voice».

-Is Lauren still in the office? I need to talk to her.
-Who’s speaking?
-My name is Anna, I work with her.

Hello, can I speak with Sofia, please?

Можно использовать предлоги to, with, about. Но помните, что «speak with» чаще всего используется в формальном контексте: «May I speak with you for a moment?».
