Laughter, while it lasts, slackens and unbraces the mind, weakens the faculties and causes a kind of remissness and dissolution in all the powers of the soul; and thus it may be looked on as weakness in the composition of human nature. But if we consider the frequent reliefs we receive from it and how often it breaks the gloom which is apt to depress the mind and damp our spirits, with transient, unexpected gleams of joy, one would take care not to grow too wise for so great a pleasure of life.

Are we missing a good synonym for thus?

В английском языке для обозначения логической связи (одно следует из другого) между предложениями или их частями используется несколько слов и выражений: therefore, as a result, so, then, hence, thus, consequently.

We must therefore consider the best way to achieve progress. —

Companies often save on development and as a result get amateur websites. —

I probably misunderstood something, so I won’t insist. —

If I don’t hear from you by Friday, then I’ll assume you’re not coming. —

A better working environment improves people’s performance, and hence productivity. —

They planned to reduce staff and thus to cut costs. —

He sustained severe injuries and, consequently, spent the rest of his life in a wheel chair. —

Например, «this happened, then that happened.» So указывает больше на причинно-следственную связь между событиями:  «this happened, so that happened» = «because this happened, that happened.»

Говорящий №1: The last bus has gone.

Говорящий №2: So/then we will have to walk.

The last bus has gone, so we will have to walk.

Разница между thus и so

Thus — синоним consequently (следовательно).

so и thus: разница и примеры употребления

(They planned to reduce staff and thus to cut costs. ).

I spoke to him thus

Разница между hence и thus

Both sides played well; thus, no winner was declared. —

The situation is getting more and more complicated. Hence we will have to proceed with caution.

Therefore
